What should i do first if i want to be a good photographer?

hi, i need help deciding what i should do first because i want to go further with my photography. i know that i need a camera but i dont know which one to get. i want to start out on the right track but i dont need the MOST professional camera, i think i should work myself up to that. im thinking about the canon 50d because i hear it is really good. also, is a tripod necessary for nature and/or people photography. basically, what do you think i need? or will want?
